Caillebotte and his artist’s house
Gustave Caillebotte, Impressionist painter
On the banks of the Yerres River, a few kilometres from the Scandibérique route, the Propriété Caillebotte is a highlight on the Impressionist trail linking Impressionist sites across the Ile de France and Normandy Regions. The artist Gustave Caillebotte lived here with his family between 1860 and 1879, able to focus on his art, executing over 80 canvases. The Caillebotte estate also offers a unique insight into life during France’s 19th-century Imperial and royal Restoration periods. The house’s interiors are now graced with period pieces thanks to donations from Les Amis de la Propriété Caillebotte and contributions from France’s Mobilier National furniture collections.
The Impressionist artist’s studio has become an exhibition room, regularly displaying original works by Caillebotte and his contemporaries. Finally, the museum rooms tell the history of the family and the estate. Around the 11-hectare grounds planted with remarkable trees, discover views that feature in many of the artist’s works, making you almost feel like you’re entering into some of his canvases!
